January Report
There’s been a ton to catch up on since my last blog post!
The fishing this January has been up and down with the weather. In stable conditions, we are having great fishing for bonefish, permit, and baby tarpon.
Liam lucked out with great weather last week. He sight fished his first bonefish, as well as a huge cobia. We were poling the backcountry flats in search of permit when we saw a 14ft sawfish swimming on the edge of a flat. We noticed it had two cobia with it, and Liam placed a perfect cast in front of the sawfish. The cobia pulled away from the sawfish and crushed his live crab! Check out the picture on the right!
On a day off this week, I had the opportunity to fish with Florida Keys legend Justin Rea. We filled our live wells with pilchards and headed offshore to target tuna. When we arrived at the wreck, fish were busting everywhere. We fired them up with live pilchards and were quickly hooked up. We headed in with a full cooler and sore arms!
Also this week, Anna and I teamed up with the LKGA for their annual cleanup. The Lower Keys Guide’s Association holds a “Get Trashed” event where the angling community gets together and gathers garbage off the beaches and out of the mangroves. The community collected 8,500 pounds of garbage!
