It’s Cold!

The frigid winter weather that has been sweeping across the southwest of the United States has finally caught up to us. I’ve seen lows in the fifties, down to 48 degrees which is further down on the thermostat than I’ve ever experienced in my ten years living in the Florida Keys. It looks as if today is the lowest of lows, and it should start warming up from here.

That being said, the fishing in between fronts has been ok. I have been out the last few days, seeing water temperatures as low as 57 degrees in the morning and climbing to 67 degrees in the afternoon. In the morning’s we’ve been lucky to find cooperative barracudas. In the afternoons, when the water temperatures reach 65 degrees, bonefish have been showing up on the south side. The other day, we were lucky to find huge mudding schools of bonefish schooling on the ocean eager to eat a heavy shrimp fly. I’m expecting this to be the trend for the next few weeks, the days when the water temperatures get right the fish pour in and are ready to play.

If you’ve got a trip booked and are worried about the cooler weather, this is the time when the biggest bonefish show up in Key West. You have an opportunity to catch a world class 6-9 pound bonefish. In addition to that I’d be excited to target large barracuda on the flats. They’ll be moving in as the water temps raise over the next few days.

I’m looking forward to the Cuda Bowl next weekend, this cooler weather came at the perfect time!

Doug landed this bonefish in 66 degree water temps!
